YOUR FIRST SMALL-SPACE EDIBLE GARDEN
Begin with the space you have and a crop you enjoy eating. A manageable first project makes it easier to notice what your plants need and learn from the results.
1. Observe your growing spot
Watch your window, balcony or patio at different times of day. Note direct sunlight, shade, wind and access to water. A bright-looking room may provide less usable light than you expect. Match the crop to those conditions, rather than buying plants first.
2. Choose one growing path
- Sunny windowsill: explore culinary herbs and check the light requirements of your chosen plant. Supplemental lighting may be needed indoors.
- Balcony or patio: start with one vegetable container, allowing space for roots and any support the mature plant needs.
- Busy schedule: understand moisture needs before considering a self-watering pot or automatic irrigation.
3. Set up a suitable container
For ordinary pots, choose drainage holes, appropriate root space and a potting mix designed for containers. Keep the pot stable and protect indoor surfaces from drainage water. Purpose-built self-watering containers work differently: follow their reservoir and overflow instructions.
On a balcony, check building rules and weight limits before adding heavy pots. Leave enough space to reach plants safely.
4. Make a simple care record
- Plant and variety
- Container size and growing mix
- Light conditions and planting date
- Moisture observations and watering
- Changes in growth, leaf colour and harvest
Check moisture and plant condition regularly. Adjust your approach as temperatures, wind and growth change; a fixed watering calendar will not suit every pot.
5. Grow with your local season
Use local guidance for frost dates and outdoor planting. A US city and a UK patio may need different timing, and indoor conditions vary too. Read seed packets and plant-specific guidance before sowing or moving plants outdoors.
